New Music Spotlight: Hullo - I'll Do Me

By: Andrew Boyd
For many of us, it can be difficult to express certain emotions, especially when those emotions include sadness and anxiety. These emotions tend to carry with them a sense of vulnerability. We all cope with anxiety and the stresses of life in our own way. Nick Bendzsa, like many artists before him, has discovered that through his music he can express these types of emotions in an honest way that is relatable and soothing to the ears. He accomplishes this with his newest project Hullo (formally known as Dormitories). Nick describes Hullo’s sound as “an expression of honest emotion, sarcasm and anxiety, creating a similar downtempo energy as groups like Men I Trust and Homeshake!”.
Hullo’s debut EP debut “I’ll Do Me” is accurately described by Bendzsa, as it perfectly pairs his honest lyrics with sombre reflective musical tones. The addition of just the right amount of sarcastic lightheartedness ensures these songs induce a feeling of ease for the listener.
The songs from Hullo’s “I’ll Do Me” are sometimes light, sometimes sombre, and sometimes express frustration balanced with acceptance. I’m reminded of the artist Shakey Graves and the delivery of his own emotional honesty in his album “Can’t Wake Up”.
This dream pop EP will induce a meditative state triggering the acceptance that life sometimes creates situations you can’t control and that’s okay. Turn off your thoughts for a moment, close your eyes, and let yourself escape the worries of your day with Hullo’s “I’ll Do Me”.
