Greta Van Fleet: Future Classic Rock
By: Ryan Tobin
And there it is. There’s that sound you’ve been waiting for. A sound you’ve been wanting to hear; that you’ve needed to hear for quite some time now. A sound that sets itself apart from the dribs and drabs of every band that calls itself rock. Well “rock bands” meet Greta Van Fleet, an actual rock band. THIS is what rock sounds like.
Being an avid lover of music I get a lot of “you have to hear this” or “what do you think of this?” from friends who think they’ve found the next band and, honestly, 95% of the bands are in one ear and out the other. Not really moving the needle if you know what I mean. However, 5 seconds into the first song, Highway Tune, from their debut EP, Black Smoke Rising, and you know you’re in for something special. You can feel it. It’s something different, yet familiar, yet… different.
Brothers Josh, Jake, and Sam Kiszka along with family friend, Danny Wagner, are from small town Frankenmuth, Michigan (Pop. ~5000), but they are about to make big waves across the country, and probably the world. Yes, the Led Zeppelin comparisons are there: from Josh’s infamous wail right down to drummer, Danny Wagner’s, Bonham-like kit arrangement. But, there’s something different about these guys; something special that cannot be taught. Maybe it has something to do with the 3 of them being brothers who grew up together and listened almost exclusively to Vinyl by rock Legends AC/DC, Zeppelin, and the Doors (to name a few), or that Josh mostly read Lord of the Rings books (sound familiar?), that they come across as wunderkinds who seem to possess some sort of secret passed down to them from the Rock Gods themselves. Or, maybe they were just created in a Lab by Republic and Lava Records. Who knows?
What I do know, however, is that in only 4 songs, this band lifted me out of my chair and moved my legs towards the closest music lover in my office to show him what we’ve all been waiting for: Actual rock music. Thank. God.
I'm telling you, don’t take my word for it, go listen to this band right now. These guys are about to blow up. They’re a band that Rolling Stone has already named “10 New Artists to Need to Know”, a band that’s already sold out their cross-country tour and a band that’s already won Loudwire’s “Best New Artist 2017” award. Soon they will be winning awards for everything rock related. Book it.
This gem of an album is already a classic in my books and something I would dub “Future Classic Rock”. My only “critique” for this album was that it was only 4 songs. I want more songs dammit. I need more songs! (Editors Note: They’ve since released 4 more songs on a double EP titled From the Fires with more on the way; Prayers answered!)
Oh yes, I forgot: These guys are only 18 and 21 years old. Your future’s bright boys.
5 out of 5.
